Industrial Piercing Healing Time

The industrial piercing — also called a scaffold or construction piercing — passes a single straight bar through two separate holes in the upper cartilage of the ear, typically from the forward helix to the helix. Because it creates and connects two wounds through dense cartilage tissue, the industrial is one of the most demanding piercings to heal, with a typical healing period of 6–12 months.

Why Does a Industrial Piercing Take 26–52 Weeks to Heal?

An industrial piercing is effectively two cartilage piercings connected by a single bar. Any movement of the bar — from sleeping, snagging, or inadvertent contact — creates trauma at both wound sites simultaneously. Because the bar is rigid, movement at one end transmits force to the other, meaning that a single snag can affect the healing of both holes at once. Cartilage's poor blood supply already slows repair; the compound nature of the industrial makes it especially sensitive to setbacks.

Healing timeline at a glance

Most industrial piercings heal in a minimum of 26 weeks under ideal conditions, with 52 weeks being the typical average. Wait for the average time before changing jewellery — even if the piercing looks healed on the surface.

Industrial Piercing Aftercare — Essential Tips

😴

Dedicated sleep protection is essential

A donut-shaped travel pillow is non-negotiable for an industrial piercing. The bar protrudes further than a single stud, making any contact during sleep highly irritating. Some people use a cut foam pad or roll a hood over the ear — the goal is zero pressure on both ends of the bar throughout the night.

🧴

Clean both entry points

Spray sterile saline onto both ends of the bar twice daily. Crusties often accumulate at both holes — soften them with saline rather than picking, and rinse thoroughly in the shower once daily.

🚫

Do not rotate or move the bar

Unlike a stud or ring, the industrial bar is long and any rotation creates significant tearing across both holes. Leave the bar completely stationary at all times. Do not try to turn it during cleaning.

⏰

Budget a full year

Even if the piercing looks fine at 6 months, the internal tissue may still be repairing. An industrial that feels tender or occasionally crusty beyond 6 months is not unusual — do not attempt a jewellery change until you are at least at the average healing time and both holes have been verified healed by a professional piercer.

Common Industrial Piercing Problems

What to watch for

Irritation bumps are extremely common with industrial piercings — the long bar creates multiple points of potential irritation. The most common cause is sleeping without a travel pillow. Hair is another major hazard: long hair can catch around the bar and pull repeatedly during daily movement. If either hole becomes severely irritated, a temporary single labret stud (leaving the other hole open with a retainer) can allow the problem hole to recover independently.
