Eyebrow Piercing Healing Time
The eyebrow piercing is a surface piercing that passes through skin and subcutaneous tissue above the eyebrow rather than through a distinct anatomical structure. Surface piercings have a fundamentally different healing dynamic and a notably higher rejection rate than piercings through defined structures. An eyebrow piercing that migrates, rejects, or scars may not be permanent — this is a realistic possibility that anyone considering this placement should understand.

Why Does a Eyebrow Piercing Take 9–12 Weeks to Heal?
Surface piercings sit in skin that is under constant tension and movement. The eyebrow area experiences micro-movement with every facial expression — raised eyebrows, squinting, expressions of surprise — and this constant micro-movement around the jewellery prevents the stable healing environment needed for long-term retention. The body may also recognise the curved barbell as a foreign body and gradually push it toward the surface, in a process called rejection.
Healing timeline at a glance
Most eyebrow piercings heal in a minimum of 9 weeks under ideal conditions, with 12 weeks being the typical average. Wait for the average time before changing jewellery — even if the piercing looks healed on the surface.
Eyebrow Piercing Aftercare — Essential Tips
Clean with saline, nothing else
Sterile saline is the only appropriate cleanser for a healing eyebrow piercing. Avoid antiseptics, tea tree oil, and cosmetic products. The skin around the eyebrow is exposed to sweat, oil, and facial products — clean twice daily and after any product contact.
Keep makeup and skincare well clear
Foundation, eyebrow pencil, concealer, and skincare products near the eyebrow must be kept away from the piercing during healing. Apply products with brushes or sponges, keeping at least 1cm clear of the jewellery.
Sunscreen causes particular problems
Sunscreen applied to the face often gets into the eyebrow piercing site. Chemical UV filters can irritate healing piercing tissue. Use mineral (zinc oxide) sunscreen, apply carefully, and clean the piercing site if sunscreen contact occurs.
Watch for migration signs
Regularly check how much bar is visible between the two beads. If more bar becomes visible over time and the skin over the bar appears thin or shiny, the piercing may be migrating. See your piercer immediately — early removal prevents a worse scar than waiting for full rejection.
Common Eyebrow Piercing Problems
What to watch for
Migration and rejection are the defining complications of eyebrow piercings. Signs include increasing bar visibility, skin thinning over the bar, persistent redness, and eventually a scar forming as the body expels the jewellery. This can happen within months or years. Switching to a longer surface bar or titanium curved barbell can slow migration in some cases. A piercer should be consulted at the first sign of migration.
