Nostril Piercing Healing Time
The nostril piercing is one of the most globally popular facial piercings, but it surprises many people with how long it takes to fully heal. Despite the thin tissue of the nostril wing, the internal healing process is lengthy — typically 4–6 months — because the inner nostril lining heals much more slowly than the outer skin.

Why Does a Nostril Piercing Take 16–24 Weeks to Heal?
The nostril passes through the alar cartilage (the wing of the nose) and the nasal lining. While the outer skin may look healed within weeks, the inside of the nostril — constantly exposed to nasal secretions, bacteria, and humidity — takes significantly longer to fully repair. The nasal environment is naturally warm and moist, creating conditions that can harbour bacteria and slow healing if aftercare is inconsistent. Touching and rotating the stud is the most common self-inflicted cause of extended nostril healing.
Healing timeline at a glance
Most nostril piercings heal in a minimum of 16 weeks under ideal conditions, with 24 weeks being the typical average. Wait for the average time before changing jewellery — even if the piercing looks healed on the surface.
Nostril Piercing Aftercare — Essential Tips
Absolutely do not touch or rotate
Nostril piercings are touched far more often than other piercings because hands naturally reach to the face. Every touch introduces bacteria from your hands. Every rotation tears the new skin forming around the post. Make a conscious daily commitment to not touch the stud.
Saline inside and outside
Clean both the outside of the stud (entry point on the nostril wing) and inside the nostril. Use a gentle saline spray on the outside twice daily. For the inside, a saline nasal spray directed toward the jewellery helps clean the internal piercing site.
Makeup and skincare — keep clear
Foundation, powder, and skincare products on a healing nostril are a common cause of prolonged healing. Apply products carefully around the stud, and clean the area with saline after any product contact.
Blow gently, one nostril at a time
The motion of blowing your nose can put pressure on the nostril stud. Blow one nostril at a time with minimal force and clean the piercing after each blow throughout the healing period.
Common Nostril Piercing Problems
What to watch for
The most common nostril complication is a raised bump on the outer or inner surface of the nostril — usually an irritation bump from touching, rotating, or unsuitable jewellery. Nostril bumps often appear as small, clear or skin-coloured papules. They respond to removing the irritant and consistent saline cleaning. True nostril infections are relatively rare but can occur in people who frequently touch their piercings with unwashed hands.
